My poor family just kept tip-toeing by my chair not at all certain what to do with me. It is not very often that I sit down in my chair to read and I spend the next hour laughing until I snort, weeping, and feeling a physical ache in my arms because I want to hug two children fictional characters so badly. I loved this book! It is a book mostly about kids written in a style for kids but will probably be most loved by nostalgic adults!. Kind of Tom Sawyer meets Heidi, meets Amelia Bedelia, meets Mitford meets Calvin and Hobbes? A story about a perfect friendship and a small town, about family and neighbors and about imagination and adventure. I loved this book! Adventures with Waffles is the perfect contemporary counterpart to those stories, taking place in modern day Norway complete with cell phones and other modern technology while still capturing the magic, wild abandon, and coming of age of the middle grades. The book touches on big themes of grief, bravery I love books about children being children, but so many of them are dated (Milly Molly Mandy, 5 Children and It, Treasure Seekers, Beverley Cleary, etc) when children lived such different lives. I rarely give 5's but this year I decided if I loved reading a book I ought to give out a few more :) This story was filled with laugh out loud funny- and pull at the heart strings moments- and I loved the refreshing simple writing style (translated from Norweigen ) I loved that this story would appeal to both girls and boys and would highly recommend it to middle readers. I absolutely loved this story! Nine year old Trille and Lena are next door neighbors who live in Norway and their life is filled with imaginative adventures, unexpected catastrophe's and eating Auntie Granny's waffles. The warmth of friendship and the support of family suffuse this lightly illustrated novel, proving that when times are tough, a little taste of sweetness can make all the difference.more But when Lena has to move away and Auntie Granny leaves the world, it sometimes seems like nothing will ever be right again. Trille loves to share everything with Lena, even Auntie Granny's waffles. Whether it's coaxing a cow onto a boat or sledding down the steepest and iciest hill with a chicken, there is always a thrill-and sometimes an injury-to be had. Hardly a day passes without Trille and Lena inventing some kind of adventure that often ends in trouble. And there is never an ordinary day when you've got a best friend like Lena. Whether it's coaxing a cow onto a boat or sledding down the steepest and iciest hill with a chicken, there is always a thrill-and sometimes Lena is Trille's best friend, even if she is a girl.
Lena is Trille's best friend, even if she is a girl.
